Neighborhoods, Towns and CommuniShare:
Neighborhoods and towns are often the first thing that comes to mind when people hear of the word “community”. Yet, all too often nowadays, these are places where people live, but are not necessarily what they consider to be their primary communities. Often, we don’t know our neighbors at all or very well—not because we (or they) are unfriendly, but because the focus of our social lives is pointed elsewhere. There are a number of ways that CommuniShare can enhance the lives of neighborhoods, towns and their residents.

  • New, shy or isolated neighbors have an opportunity to “introduce” themselves to the neighborhood.
  • Residents with their own businesses can advertise for free among their neighbors.
  • Residents can recommend contractors (and even show their work), possibly resulting in savings in money, higher quality repairs and improvements, and/or even enhanced property values.
  • Neighborhood associations can identify skills and resources available within the neighborhood.
  • Parents can arrange playdates for their children.
  • Adults can arrange dates for themselves.
  • People can identify and gather around issues of neighborhood concern.
  • Identifying neighbors and their personal resources is likely to increase residents’ sense of neighborhood identity and pride.

Note: Those neighbors without Internet access could be served by: 1) terminals available in the local public library or in a neighborhood community office, or 2) printouts of Entries.
