Residential Communities and CommuniShare:
“Residential Communities” can refer to intentional communities, condominiums, “over 55” communities, nursing homes, and a wide variety of other residential situations which usually have some degree of shared facilities and/or services, and enjoy a community identity with clear boundaries. Although there might be a strong sense of community identity, residents often don’t know one another as well as they would like. Many of these residents may not have access to the web, but this can be ameliorated by: 1) the fact that there’s usually a central office which might be able to make a terminal available, and/or 2) CommuniShare Entries could be output into a printed form which could be distributed by itself or as part of the community’s regular newsletter. Applying CommuniShare in this setting has several benefits...

  • In some of these communities (e.g., nursing homes) there is a very acute sense of isolation. CommuniShare could be used to unearth interests and experiences (e.g., people who know Yiddish) which could be used to open new doors for social interaction.
  • Increased networking and a stronger sense of community could help the community seem more unique and desirable.
  • The community’s central office or administration would become aware of skills and resources within the community that may be of assistance with various programs or projects.
